The research units of the Faculty of Technology present their work and projects:
Civil Engineering research unit, link
The Civil and Environmental Engineering Research Unit (CIV) aims to advance toward an intelligent, sustainable, resilient, and resource-efficient built environment.
- Prof. Ulla Haverinen-Shaughnessy, Director of the research unit
- Anne Tuomela, Director of Civil Engineering Degree program
- Aino-Maija Vuori, Project researcher, presenting LOGIDI – Improving employment of young people in rural areas project
Environmental and Chemical Engineering research unit, link
The Environmental and Chemical Engineering Research Unit develops solutions for a sustainable future by combining chemistry and materials research with practical process technology. Its research covers areas such as environmental engineering, catalysis, separation processes, inorganic chemistry, and control engineering. The focus is on the green transition: reducing emissions, utilizing carbon dioxide, hydrogen technologies, e-fuels, and energy-efficient processes. The work supports climate change mitigation, sustainable use of resources, and industrial competitiveness.
- Prof. Mika Ruusunen, Director of the research unit
- Ari Vuokila, PostDoctoral Researcher

Fibre and Particle Engineering research unit, link
The Fiber and Particle Engineering Research Unit focuses on developing new materials that promote sustainability within the circular economy and bioeconomy.
- Associate Prof. Tero Luukkonen
Industrial Engineering and Management research unit, link
Industrial Engineering combines technical expertise, mastery of economic methods, and an understanding of human behavior. In Industrial Engineering, phenomena are studied and problems are solved from these three perspectives.
- Jyrki Hietaniemi Doctoral researcher and Jouko Nuottila PostDoc presenting AKILIT – Circular economy of batteries – future value chains, business models, technology, and legislation project
Intelligent Machines and Systems research unit, link
Mechatronics research focuses on the comprehensive control of the hardware and methods required for machine operation. Machine diagnostics is a field of engineering that studies methods used to determine the condition and load state of machines. The systems engineering research group is oriented toward the theory, methods, and applications of control and systems engineering in process automation, particularly in energy engineering.
- Yrjö Louhisalmi, University Lecturer, presenting EXCEED – Excellence in Green and Digital Manufacturing project
Measurement technology research unit, link
The Measurement Technology Unit (MITY) develops research and technology in measurement science. The unit operates in two application areas: cleantech, and health and wellbeing.
- Mika Mahosenaho, Project researcher and Niko Pellonpää Project researcher presenting KAIVESI-project
Oulu Mining School research unit, link
The research unit significantly strengthens the University of Oulu’s role as an expert in northern natural resources and sustainable development. Oulu Mining School covers the entire mining value chain across the fields of geosciences, geophysics, mining engineering, and mineral processing
